Julia Kiehlmann & Felix Deufel
2018 / Multichannel Sound Sculpture / Burnt Fireworks, Soundloop
Towers of burnt fireworks bear witnesses to a boisterous mood. Human voices resound from the charred batteries of fireworks through built-in loudspeakers, imitating the sound of sparklers, howlers and rockets.
How dare they try to end this beauty? explores the ability to feel pleasure and joy and to express them (collectively). To act out feelings of joy (or else) can be a vantage point for social change.
Raising your voice and realising how far it carries is an empowering experience. Motivating each other, tuning in and listening to each other are indispensable for a loving practice. Without solidarity with those who are running out of breath, every emancipatory claim fizzles out in a puff of smoke.
Mutual support is a tool to persistence, so the indignation about social and political inadequacies does not fade away as soon as one’s own privileges are at stake. An artwork about the options of rebellion, the power, radicality and exhaustion of bodies, voices uniting, voices fading, voices missing.
