Interactive Sound Installation / February 13–23, 2025
arc creates a complex, immersive, and interactive musical space in which questions of individual and collective perception can be explored. arc enables individual contemplation and musical listening as well as communication and playful exploration of sound worlds. In this way, the space becomes a score, and the audience creates its own composition.
The work is based on precise position tracking of the audience, who move through a space with walls of projected light while wearing wireless headphones. Depending on the position in the space and in relation to the rest of the audience, the sounds perceived through the headphones change. The composition thus unfolds primarily in space and radically transforms as the audience moves through the walls of light. Through the exploration of the space, moments of collective musical perception arise within the individually experienced sound worlds, but these are constantly unsettled by the composition. Along with a fusion of real and virtual sounds, an intriguing dialogue emerges between individual and collective perception.
arc is a new iteration of the work Diaphanous Sounds, which was developed by Paul Hauptmeier in 2022 for the Venice Biennale and performed there.
