Do you remember the sound of my voice?
The classic theme of terraforming Mars is one that has recently unsettled me, underscored by the obvious conflict between the current climate catastrophe and the space journeys of the super-rich. Beyond our innate drive as explorers, colonizers, and promoters of endless growth, the dream of settling Mars also seems to reveal humanity’s tendency to escape into other worlds—a tendency arising from the anticipation of slipping into our own extinction and the trauma that comes with it.
With stony faces, we rush excitedly toward a collective schizophrenia, only to realize that our minds remain suspended, clinging to memories of what once was while projecting sounds of utopia. Time collapses in on itself—the present becomes a memory recalled in the future; bodies are fragmented, displaced, socially atomized. Torn between these states, we tend to forget or suppress our embodied presence and the shared responsibility for a collectively created and experienced materiality.
“Do you remember the sound of my voice?” is a performative installation that addresses the theme of terraforming Mars and invites us to shift our focus from the wonders of technological utopia back to our humanity. Pauline Oliveros’ sound meditations, which emphasize the conscious act of deep listening, are presented as open gateways to personal inner experiences, while an audiovisual narrative envelops the outer layer of the performance space.
