Robert Normandeau
With Robert Normandeau, a true pioneer of immersive music is visiting ZiMMT:
Normandeau (*1955 in Quebec, Canada) is an internationally renowned acousmatic composer and has been a professor of electroacoustic composition at the University of Montreal for over twenty years. In 2009, together with his research group GRIS (Research Group in Spatial Immersion), he began developing the software SpatGRIS, which enables the creation of immersive, spatial sound environments. The program is open source, freely available, and features an intuitive interface. Normandeau will offer a workshop on SpatGRIS at ZiMMT and will also use it in his concert performance.
In his works, Normandeau is dedicated to a sensuous and figurative sound aesthetic — a “cinema for the ears.” Since 1990, he has focused on multichannel composition, the spatiality of music, and immersive playback through speaker domes, such as those in planetariums. Over the past thirty years, his compositions have been regularly awarded at international festivals.
