Brigitta Muntendorf

Immersive sound installation / July 15–24, 2022

A breath in a relaxed state lasts 5 seconds. The singers of the up to 42-voice choir in ||:Forest of Breath:|| breathe ten times faster.

They thereby provoke a state of trance, as well as alertness and “trouble,” that condition which awakens the senses and fosters readiness for transformation (Donna Haraway).

The voices in ||:Forest of Breath:|| form a community that invites the audience to participate.

The audience can synchronize with the breathing and thus become part of the organism, or alternatively follow the choral or individual voices as observers.

A production by ECHO FACTORY with kind support from Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival and The Norwegian Soloists’ Choir.

Brigitta Muntendorf

Born in 1982 in Hamburg, Brigitta Muntendorf is a German-Austrian composer whose work is driven by the vision of music that internalizes referentiality as a compositional principle and creates meaningful connections to other art and forms of expression.

In her current projects, Brigitta focuses on transdigital and interdisciplinary music and dance theater (ARCHIPEL / Thiersch & Fujimoto: Ruhrtriennale > Theater der Welt, Tanz im August 2021; MELENCOLIA / Ensemble Modern: Bregenzer Festspiele 2022), as well as audiovisual and 3D sound installations (Kunsthalle Mannheim, Duolun Museum of Modern Art Shanghai / BankART Temporary).

She has been a fellow at the Cité Internationale des Arts in Paris and the Villa Kamogawa in Kyoto, and has received the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation Prize as well as the German Music Authors’ Prize. Her works have been performed by numerous ensembles such as Klangforum Wien, Ensemble Modern, Mocrep Chicago, Ensemble Musikfabrik, and Les Siècles at festivals worldwide, including Festival d’Automne Paris, Donaueschinger Musiktage, Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, Warsaw Autumn, Munich Biennale, Musica Strasbourg, ULTIMA Oslo, Art Share L.A., ONASSIS Athens, Metro Club Kyoto, TPAM Festival, and Kyoto Experiment.

Brigitta Muntendorf is the founder of Ensemble Garage, artistic director of the FMN Festival, and since 2017 a professor of composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Tanz Köln.
