At ZiMMT, we offer the many facets of media immersion an adequate stage and a place for creative experimentation. As one of only a few cultural institutions nationwide, the ZiMMT has an innovative 3D audio system consisting of 36 loudspeakers. Here, immersive, space-consuming concerts, exhibitions and performances can be developed and presented. In addition to the interdisciplinary exchange of artists and developers, we are particularly interested in the transfer of knowledge and workshops.
The ZiMMT sees itself as a place for professional exchange and content mediation through its diverse range of festivals, conferences and laboratories.
It is the declared goal of the ZiMMT to promote the development of innovative media technologies, to inspire a diverse audience and to support aspiring media artists.
The ZiMMT is currently set up in a former industrial crane hall located on the Kreativhof in the east of Leipzig. There, the initiators of the ZiMMT founded the studio Kontor 80 five years ago in search of working space and run a studio for 3D audio there. Located in the immediate vicinity of Eisenbahnstraße and only 10 minutes from the city center, more than 50 creative professionals have now settled there with their workshops and studios on over 2000m². The crane hall has a size of 170m² and a height of 6m, with surrounding skylight and large industrial windows to the street, the hall is flooded with daylight, but can also be completely darkened.
The 3D Audio System with 32 loudspeakers and 4 subwoofers, which is installed modularly in the hall, is a fixed component and the heart of the ZiMMT. The system offers possibilities for production, performance and experimentation with nearly all available multi-channel audio formats, starting with conventional surround formats such as 5.1, 7.1, 8.1, individual arrangements up to a closed dome with 32 regularly arranged loudspeakers. The system offers almost all analog and digital ways of feeding in and is therefore ready for various applications and scenarios from the live and playback area. The room also offers flexible possibilities for the installation of lighting and projection systems.
Immersive media systems are becoming increasingly important worldwide. In concert halls, theaters, cinemas, but also in planetariums or museums, elaborate 3D audio systems are installed. Again and again it is noticed that these promising possibilities are used too little in the everyday life of the venues. The reason for this is primarily a lack of high-quality artistic content for such systems. Artists and musicians seldom have the chance to gain sufficient experience with the complex technical systems and to deal intensively with the artistic potential of the new possibilities. The ZiMMT offers access to and the opportunity to gain experience with 3D audio systems in the context of a professionally equipped venue, supervised by an expert team. The aim is to provide artists from various backgrounds with a low-threshold entry into the field of immersive art, music and related technologies.
The ZiMMT sees itself in this respect as a mediator and contact partner to bring together creative people, researchers and companies, and at the same time offers a place where common concepts can be developed, tested and made accessible to a broad public.
