Die Installation “if we vanish” der Klangkünstler Nikhil Nagaraj (Bangalore, India) und Felix Deufel (Leipzig, Germany) ist eine immersive Reise an einige der letzten unberührten Flecken unserer Erde: In Tropische Regenwälder in Süd- und Nordindien und in die Höhenlagen des Himalaya. Umgeben von einer szenischen Videoinstallastion treten drei Klangsphären in Kontrast zueinander: Die Biophonie (Geräusche nichtmenschlicher Lebensformen), die Geophonie (Naturklänge, die nicht von Lebewesen erzeugt werden) und die Antrophonie (Geräusche, die der Mensch erzeugt). Klangverschmutzung durch den Menschen überlagert überall auf der Welt nach und nach die ursprünglichen Soundscapes. Der immense negative Einfluss auf Ökosysteme und die Gesundheit der Lebewesen darin ist oft noch wenig bekannt. “if we vanish” rückt Veränderungen des Umweltklangs ins Bewusstsein.

Nagaraj und Felix Deufel haben seit 2017 oft auf dem Feld 3D Audio Research und -Produktion zusammengearbeitet. In ihren gemeinsamen Arbeiten erforschen sie die Einflüsse von Klang und Musik auf menschliches Empfinden und die narrativ-bildliche Assoziationskraft von Klang im Raum. 2022 waren sie ihrem Team waren vierzig Tage lang auf Expedition in Indien, um das sonische Erbe unberührter Lebensräume naturgetreu mit 3D Aufnahmegeräten einzufangen, um es vor seinem absehbaren und unwiderbringlichen Verschwinden zu dokumentieren. Die nun erstmals konservierten Soundscapes bilden das Klangmaterial er Installation – und können wissenschaftlich ausgewertet werden, um den Zustand der Ökosysteme zu erforschen.

The installation „if we vanish“ by sound artists Nikhil Nagaraj (Bangalore, India) and Felix Deufel (Leipzig, Germany) offers an immersive journey to some of the last pristine places on earth: Tropical rainforests in South and North India and the high altitudes of the Himalayas. Surrounded by a scenic video installation, three spheres of sound create a contrast: biophony (sounds of non-human life forms), geophony (natural sounds not produced by living beings) and antrophony (sounds produced by humans). All over the world, sound pollution by humans is gradually overlaying the original soundscapes. The immense negative impact on ecosystems and the health of all creatures within them is often still little known. „if we vanish“ brings awareness to changes in environmental sound.

Since 2017 Nagaraj and Felix Deufel have often collaborated in the field of 3D audio research and production. Their work explores the influences of sound and music on human sensation and the narrative-image associative power of sound in space. In 2022, they went on a forty-day expedition to India with their team to faithfully capture the sonic heritage of untouched habitats using 3D recording devices, documenting it before its foreseeable and irretrievable disappearance. The soundscapes, now preserved for the first time, form the sound material of the installation – and can furthermore be scientifically evaluated to explore the state of ecosystems.

Mit der Reihe swim (Spatial Works and Immersive Music) präsentiert das ZiMMT Konzerte und Installationen von 16 lokalen und internationalen Künstler:innen, die auf ganz unterschiedliche Weise Klang im Raum künstlerisch-forschend einsetzen. In dreitägigen Microresidencies können sie neue Ansätze ausprobieren und ihre Konzerte und Klanginstallationen mit 3D Audio Technologie entwickeln. Alle Konzerte werden in hoher Qualität mit binauralem Audio live gestreamt – für ein raumgreifendes Erlebnis, vor Ort und überall.
